Product Description
THE No.08 CARBONSTEEL POCKET KNIFE
The flagship size of Opinel’s pocket knife collection; the No.08 has been featured in countless museums, books and galleries around the world. The knife is compact and fits well in any sized hand. The 3 ¼ inch stainless steel blade and varnished beech wood handle will stand up to years of use.
The blade has been designed and perfected over generations to maximize the cutting quality and ensure it’s easy to sharpen after years of hard work. Use it in the garden, at the dinner table, or even on your next adventure. Keep the knife in your pocket, purse or toolbox and we are certain you'll love it for years to come!
THE RIGHT FEATURES AT THE RIGHT COST
The patented VIROBLOC locking mechanism keeps your knife safely closed in your pocket and locks the blade open during use. The simplicity of the knife’s design and it’s sustainable wooden handle makes the knife lightweight too!
THE PERFECT SIZE FOR EVERYDAY CARRY
Both smart and simple, the Opinel folding knife is composed of 5 elements: the blade, the wooden handle, the fixed ferrule, the rivet and the rotating VIROBLOC locking ring which was added in 1955 to sizes No.06 and above.
The knife is equipped with a 3.25 inch blade, open length 7.5 inches.
CARING FOR YOUR KNIFE
All Opinel wooden-handle knives are not designed to be washed in the dishwasher. Heat and moisture will cause any wood to swell which will make the knife hard to open at times. Opinel suggests carefully hand-washing and immediately drying the blade with a soft, dry towel. Lubricating the blade with cooking oil before closing the knife is recommended (this prevents oxidation).
MADE IN THE FRENCH ALPS FOR OVER 130 YEARS
Joseph Opinel designed his first pocket knife in 1890, creating a tool that is as robust and functional as it is simple and beautiful. From his workshop at the foot of the French Alps, Opinel forged a cult classic. Generations of artists, explorers, and farmers have carried the instantly recognizable, imminently useful Opinel knife in their pockets.
Little has changed since 1890. Rooted in history and a commitment to craftsmanship, the Opinel family still makes their knives in the Savoie region of France. Each year, THEIR team of 150 employees in France manufactures over 5 million knives, ranging from outdoor tools to kitchen knives, all to honor Joseph Opinel’s focus on quality and simplicity.

No, they aren't the latest in super-fancy tactical EDC technology with some sort of quick-flick thumb lever/button/knob/hole opening, super-gripy GFRP side panels, or some magnificent new steel alloy that can only be forged in the heart of a volcano and only sharpened by a master craftsman, but they don't really need to be, nor are they anywhere near the cost of some of those knives.
I bought this knife (a No.8) just over a year ago and have been carrying it every day for most of that time; I liked it so much that I recently purchased a stainless No.6 with a walnut handle to supplement it and I carry that smaller knife when I am wearing pants with smaller pockets, dressier outfits or in places with a 3" blade limit. I've use it for basic utility knife tasks such as opening boxes, cutting cardboard, trimming plastic and wood, and simple food prep and it's never had an issue.
My knife arrived plenty sharp for my needs and with a good amount of resistance in the hinge and lock mechanism.
---Opinel No. 8---
+PROS+
-Simple design and appearance. The knife is non-intimidating in appearance or opening.
-Good Size: The handle size fits very well in the hand and the blade is a good length to do most tasks while not being too big or cumbersome
-Basic Carbon Steel: The blade takes an edge easily and holds it fairly well. It is easy to resharpen if/when needed.
-Sturdy: I've not had a task where I feel uncomfortable using this knife vs another utility knife and i find this to be better feeling than a multitool
-Locking Ring: Engaging the lock requires a conscious thought and disengaging the lock keeps your fingers away from the edge.
-Inexpensive: I paid $12 for this knife. It's got great performance for the cost and should something happen to it, you aren't out much.
-Customizeable: These knives are very easy to tailor to your preference. The handle can be re-contoured or stained/dyed however you please and you can force-patina the blade to make some cool effects. The cost makes it an accessible project (and if you mess up you aren't down much). I made a custom one as a gift for a friend to match one of his rifles he loved it.
-CONS-
-Basic Carbon Steel: This isn't one of the "super-alloys" that you'll see used on many modern folding knives. It won't hold an edge as well or or as long. Also, it is carbon steel so it does need some additional care.
-Somewhat Thick for the Size: The rounded handle does make it take up a bit more room than other, more-modern designs of a similar blade length.
-Wood Handle can Swell: The handle is solid wood so it can be affected by humidity. If it swells up too much it can bind, making the knife much harder to open. This can be mitigated, if needed, by sanding or filing the blade groove open a little. I've never had this issue but I don't live in a super-humid area.
-Will Buy More than One: I've purchased at four Opinels because I like them so much. A few were gifts or projects, but the others are so I can have a variety of sizes and wood handles. I could also see buying multiples to keep them in various places, wherever you need a nice utility knife.
---General Notes---
-The carbon steel Opinels need more maintenance than the stainless steel equivalents, especially after food prep. Cutting up acidic foods will cause the blade to patina (which is awesome but might bug some people) and the blade can and will rust without care. After food prep / washing, after cutting a lot of absorbent material (cardboard, for example), and just periodically, I wipe the blade down with mineral oil. Mineral oil is a good choice as it is food-safe, but if you never plan to use your knife for food prep you could use something with better anti-corrosive properties. If you are reading this and wondering why you'd get carbon of stainless, it's because the carbon steel tends to hold an edge better.
-Other than the size, blade material, and wood used for the handle, there really aren't many "options" like you'll find with other knives. Opinel does offer some variants, but for the most part you just get the one blade profile. Handle material also seems to be an option primarily on the stainless knives.
-Blade length sometimes seem a bit strange. No.9 -No.12, the blade length is the model number in cm. No.8 and below the blade length is longer than the model number by 0.5cm to 1cm. If you want or need something under 3" blade length, you'll need to drop to the No.6, which is also the smallest size with the locking ring.
I hope this review was helpful! Go buy and enjoy an Opinel!
The relatively few negative reviews of this knife mostly focus on the blade's tendency to rust. I would point out that this is a carbon steel knife - it absolutely *will* rust if not cared for properly and anyone buying it should expect that. If you want a knife that won't rust, Opinel makes this exact same model in stainless steel, available right here on Amazon for the same price.
That said, carbon steel has one big advantage over stainless - a carbon blade can be sharper (if sharpened correctly) and tends to hold an edge better/longer than a stainless blade. Simply oil the blade once in a while, remove any rust promptly, and embrace the inevitable color change in the blade over time (the "patina"), which will help prevent rust. If you aren't willing to do those things, go with stainless steel.
For the price, this knife is very well made and functional. The blade is good quality and arrived quite sharp. The beechwood handle is nicely shaped (both ergonomically and aesthetically), and is very lightweight - I can almost forget I have a knife in my pocket. The manually-actuated locking ring can lock the blade both open and closed; the latter is somewhat unique among folding knives but is welcome for me - there is no chance of opening, even partially, in my pocket. This knife does not open and close easily with one hand, but it isn't intended to and that isn't important to me. If it's important to you, look elsewhere.
This being my first Opinel knife, I can't comment objectively on longevity; however, from what I see so far it could last a very long time. Highly recommended.
It is impossible to exaggerate the qualities of this blade. It is insulting to say it is good "for the price," if it were $100 or more I would still say it was a great knife (although I would have just longed for it, and not purchased it). I say that in all honesty. I have a modest collection, just a few knives that I have selected to actually use daily and camping. These include a high end Strider (wonderful knife, but I work in an office and I am concerned about making people nervous), some buck knives, a MoraKniv (another just crazy nice inexpensive knife, but again not for the office), and some cheaper knives (including a Gerber that is a huge disappointment). I just mention these to qualify my opinion of this particular blade. I love it. A lot. It has been my every day carry in my slacks and jeans for a while now and I have plenty of opportunities to assess it. It's a beautiful knife, when it's closed is elegant and does not look like a weirdo tactical knife, just like a french piece of art so nobody gets nervous. Open, it is still such a classic look that the only comments I get about it, even from people who don't carry, is that it's a good looking knife. Carries nice in the pocket, which I was concerned about, I usually have pocket clips on my knives.
Casual, Dress, Bushcraft, Kitchen, EDC, fishing, basically whatever you would need a blade for this guy should have you covered (haven't tried field dressing anything, I imagine it would work fine but get super grody). No doubt there are obviously better knives out there for specific situations like self defense, wood processing (I would not use this for batoning through a log), hunting, or whatever but for a terrific pocket knife to always have on you, you would be hard pressed to find its equal.
